Concept visualization i did about 3 weeks ago showing the actions of the character with the main game mechanics; the grapple.

Created today as I was having trouble sleeping with ideas running around my head. Showcasing the concept of the grapple and free roaming of the game.

Did a quick re-sketch of our hero, without realising that my laptop battery was running low and it shut itself down resulting in me losing all the updated sketches. Saving time, I just redraw the final output of the character without showing  the changes that i had make as it was pretty much in my head and I'm pretty please with this final outcome.

Things that was changed:


  1. Hero have more friendly playful outlook.
  2. Replace the hero jacket
  3. Added a magnetized bagpack in relation to the grapple game mechanincs

20th - 22nd May 2015

Did a short research regarding ambient occlusion technique as we are moving away from the normal roller-blade cell shading game cliche, Think this technique could help me and Johnson later on.

Been 2 days since I actually looked back to the main character, not because I don't want too, it's more to the lack of ideas running in my head. I was asking other groups of people other than my group members, while most of them kind off give me an answer, I am more particular drawn to an answer given by my 8 years old cousin; "For a hero he looks pretty mean with the sharp eyes" . Another  feedback was what I get from Stan and Joey "The color code of the character doesn't give the feeling of a hero".

Meanwhile while still trying to figure our hero, I began to sketch out his rival, his unrequited love partner. On my previous post I had actually sketch her out to a certain extend, this are the guidelines i had in mind while drawing her:-

  1. She will be 2 years older than Tessa.
  2. Very competitive and in different team from Tessa.
  3. She has a personality of a bitch. ^_^
1.1 Rose initial concept
This was the first full body concept and I hate it right away. I have no answer to why I hate this particular concept, it's just my gut feeling telling me this is certainly not what I want and not what i had in mind so much so i didn't even bother showing to other team members!


1.2 Rose makeover concept
Did a few short sketches on my sketchbook and ultimately land on this look.While it is no near the finished product I was pretty happy how she turns out.

Show it to others and all of them agreed of having the girl wearing the third costume with high boots roller-blade. I will certainly make an adjustment in the future so watch this space!.

Had our meeting with both the tutor and he was discussing our game direction in terms of Art and programming stuff that was required for both artist and programmers.

Some of the important pointers that was highlighted:-
  1. Try different artstyle and look
  2. Group direction in terms of planning
  3. Think of the game in player perspective; what make the game fun? etc
1.1 Non colored-Tessa Max
I did a quick clean sketch before the class actually of our main character, the feedback as mentioned that we might have stick with a certain artystle to quickly without trying other style that might/might not be better for the current one. From my previous post i actually had gone through and mentioned the different style i have tried to fit the team needs.
After the meeting we had another discussion where the team bring about this issues and finally decided that we will be keeping this look. Truth to be told I actually agreed with both Lazaros and Alex and so i decided to look the character in a different angle for any changes.

1.2 Colored Tessa Max

While above drawings actually shows the so called final look of our hero; I had to crack my head open in terms of the character design and fashion sense initially. Below are the few images  that i came out with :-

From the blueprint, as a team, we decided on the fourth design for Max but make do without his mouth cover which pretty much how I get about this particular character design and look.

Process, Ideation and more sketches

After the initial concept sketches, I get back to the drawing board and sketches more character. The most critique that i get is that the main character pretty much look like Hiro from Big Hero 6.  With the constructive criticism in hand, I began my lonely journey of sketching our hero once again.

These are the revamp concept. While sketching this, the hardest part I faced, was to make it right; on both Disney and the anime style art. Upon showing to the group, most of the members didn't like this particular concept as the hero look pretty old.

I decided to step back a little and start to point out the characteristic of our hero, his traits, personalities etc.and discuss it with the others on their interpretation of the hero looks.

After a few discussion and feedback within the team i decide to ahead with the new sketch based on this points:-

character age: 12-16 years
personalities: goofy,couldn't care less of his surroundings
love life: unrequited one sided loved

I have to admit this looks much better than the two previous sketches above. Personally i prefer the first character hairstyle but the other team members prefer the sixth designs as Stan was saying during the team conversation on facebook; "He look more aerodynamics and fast compare to the others"

Did a few sketches before our meeting with our tutor on Wednesday. The team have actually discussed on the style of art and agreed leaning towards mix of both anime and disney style. My previous design of the main character was merely trying to get the feel and look of all the characters as a whole. Did a few sketch as well of different style and look (more human-like character) but as mentioned the team prefer to have the cartoon style to avoid realistic game world.

Personally it does feel hard mixing the two artstyle initially; as it was the first time i had tried to mix these two different genre. but after a few altercation and feedback from the groups and some people, i managed to get the style the group going for.

The team was officially created and we have our first meeting on Monday, 9th March. Still lacking an animator and an artist which is really peculiar in my opinion.

Initially, when me and Stan were the only people in the group we discussed briefly the art style that we will be aiming for in the game. I did a few sketches and the team pretty much like it. Still i believed a few more tweak is needed as I don't really like the anime feel, the final art style will certainly similar to Disney Big Hero 6.
